Catalogue Note

Gaspar Pieter Verbruggen the Younger was baptised on 11 November 1664. After studying under his father, he became a master of the Guild of St. Luke of Antwerp in 1677. From the early 1680s, he taught several painters such as Peter Frans Casteels (active 1690-98), Gillis Vinck the Younger (active 1697-98) and Jacob Melchior van Herck (active 1691-1735). In 1691 he became Dean of the Guild but moved to The Hague in Holland, following his bankruptcy in 1703. There he worked closely with Mathieu Terwesten (1670-1757). Verbruggen died 14 March 1730 in his native Antwerp.1

We are grateful to Fred G. Meijer o♏f the RKD, The Hague for supporting the attribution on the basis of photographs.
