Provenance

Anonymous sale, Paris, Beaussant & Lefèvre, 28 June 2000, lot 18, for $79,323;
There purchased by the present owner.

Condition

The canvas is relined. There is slight thinness in some of the darks of the figure at left, but other areas with lighter pigments are very well preserved. This is especially true of the turban which retains a fair amount of original impasto. The figure of Christ is in generally good condition. UV reveals a few scattered and loosely applied retouches in Christ's body and hair. These appear to the naked eye as slightly brown bruises in Christ's skin, though they are not overly disturbing. All retouches appear to sit over a dirty older varnish. in a carved gilt wood frame.
