Catalogue Note
Jean-Baptiste Mallet, a leading student of Pierre Paul Prud'hon, established his reputation in France during the revolutionary years with elegant and refined gouache genre scenes with contemporary interiors. In this picture, a young woman receives a visit from two friends, while a maid lights a fire off to the side. Another version of this composition is located in the Musée Cognac-Jay, Paris.
