Condition

The canvas has been relined and is in good, stable condition. There appear to be two old, restored horizontal compound tears running through the background and sky upper left and through the figure's face, upper right. While these are visible to the naked eye they have been filled and retouched sensitively and are not distracting. The paint surface retains some areas of impasto. There is a slight accretion on the border along the lower right edge and another in the hair of the figure right of center. Inspection under UV reveals scattered minor retouched losses throughout and further retouching to the clouds along the lower edge and lower right hand corner. There are reinforcements to the darks in the drapery of the Madonna and the angel to the left of her. The painting could be hung in its present state and is offered in a black carved wood frame with a gold border.

Catalogue Note

This is likely the work of either a Pugliese follower of Giaquinto or of a Spanish painter influenced by that artist during his sojourn in Spain between 1753 and 1762.
