Description

  • Florentine School, 17th Century
  • Portrait of Piero Soderini
  • inscribed at top: PETRVS SODERINVS
  • oil on panel
  • 26 1/2 x 20 1/2 inches

Provenance

Mrs. Collingwood, Dissington Hall, Northumberland;
With Nelson & Schauer Enterprises, San Francisco (as Giorgio Vasari).

Condition

the panel is flat and stable, beveled on all four edges, with two horizontal grooves approximately 3 in. in width, presumably where there had previously been batons attached. The varnish has a strong craquelure which is blooming resulting in very minor losses to the paint in some areas though this would be rectified with a fresh varnish and the paint surface beneath appears to be in good condition. There is a minor scrape with a few small losses running from approximately 4 in. above the upper edge through the sitter's right shoulder. Inspection under UV is somewhat impeded by the milky varnish though does reveal a previous old campaign of retouching to address the craquelure pattern. With a fresh varnish the painting will be ready to hang.

Catalogue Note

Piero di Tommaso Soderini (1452-1522) was a Florentine statesman.  He was made ambassador to the French court in 1493 and in 1502, he was elected gonfaloniere for life.  However, with the return of the exiled Medici family in 1512, he was deposed and driven into exile.  He sought refuge in Dalmatia where he remained until the election of Pope Leo X who summoned him to Rome; he lived there for the rest of his life, never returning to Florence.
