Condition
This early warm-toned print, on double-weight paper with a surface sheen, is in generally good condition. The edges are rubbed, the corners are bumped, and there is light soiling in the margins. There is what appears to be a faint, 1/8-inch rust-colored deposit of indeterminate nature in the upper right corner of the image. When examined in raking light, the following are visible: a soft, horizontally linear, wave-like raised area across the entire upper portion of the print; and a sharp, crescent-shaped handling crease at the left side of the print.
On the reverse, there is age-darkening at the periphery, as well as light soiling overall.
When examined with ultraviolet light, this print does not appear to fluoresce.

Catalogue Note
The photograph offered here is from a series of photographs Frank made of people who lived or worked on his block of 11th Street, in New York City’s Greenwich Village. Fifteen of these photographs were submitted to LIFE magazine’s 1951 Young Photographers contest, in a photo-essay entitled ‘People You Don’t See.’ Frank took second place in the Individual Pictures category and was called by one of the judges, ‘a poet with a camera.’
