This impressive portrait of three finely-dressed gentlemen smoking is nearly flawless. This skillfully-rendered plate exhibits a high level of detail, from the velvet on the central figure's collar, to the textures and patterns of their tailored trousers; to the carved wood and upholstered armchairs, to the woven floral carpet. Flesh-toned tinting enlivens the sitters, and gilt has been expertly applied to highlight pinky rings and pocket watches. Remarkable care has been taken in arranging this tableau. The central figure delicately lights the cigar of a companion, while the third sitter observes, thoughtfully smoking in repose. An uneven, thin border of tarnish follows the mat's shape, and there is a very small rust-colored area in the upper right quadrant of the plate. This does not detract from the plate's fine appearance. The back of the plate is silvered, suggesting that it was electroplated with an additional layer of silver by the daguerreotypist. The case features an intricate design of flora and a pagoda. The front and back of the case are rubbed. The case is detatched at the spine and there are losses of leather along the edges.
