Description

  • Bill Brandt
  • NUDE, AUGUST 1948
  • Gelatin silver print
  • 9 x 7 3/4 inches
the photographer's credit stamp and dated twice 'August 1948' in ink on the reverse, framed, an Irving Galleries label on the reverse, 1948, probably printed in the early 1950s

Provenance

Estate of the photographer, Edwynn Houk, agent

Acquired from Irving Galleries, Palm Beach, 2000

Condition

This print is on double-weight paper with a semi-glossy surface. Brandt left an approximately one-inch margin at the bottom and an 1/8-inch margin along the left, right and upper edges. The photographer's handwork and original retouching are visible overall, which highlights and defines details of the image. The left and right edges of the print are rippled. On the reverse of the print, 'August 1948' is written in ink with a ballpoint pen and with a calligraphy or felt-tipped pen. 'NB2 156' is written in an unidentified hand in pencil. When examined under ultraviolet light, this print does not appear to fluoresce.
