Description
- Ansel Adams
- 'CLEARING WINTER STORM, YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, CA.'
- Gelatin silver print
mounted, signed in pencil on the mount, a Carmel studio stamp, with title and date in ink, on the reverse, 1938, printed in 1977 (400 Photographs, p. 123)
Condition
This print recently underwent conservation, and a full treatment report is available from the department upon request. Visible upon close examination or in raking light are the following: various small deposits of retouching, notably in the upper left corner and lower right quadrant of the image; several small glossy deposits of indeterminate nature, primarily in the sky area and lower right quadrant; and a 2-inch horizontal scratch that does not appear to break the emulsion in the sky area.
On the reverse of the mount along the upper edge are adhesive remnants from previous hinges.
Although Karen Haas's and Rebecca Senf's book, 'Ansel Adams in the Lane Collection,' publishes the most comprehensive list to date of the studio stamps and labels Adams used throughout his career, the Carmel studio stamp on the reverse of the present mount is not included. We base our dating of this print on the written print date of '1977' on the revere of the mount.
