Description

- THE STEERAGE
- Photogravure
large-format photogravure on vellum, as issued, in 291, Nos. 7-8 (New York: '291,' September-October 1915), in the original printed wrappers, with texts by Paul Haviland and Marius De Zayas, 1907, printed in or before 1915. Folio, single sheet, folding (Greenough 310)
Provenance
Gift of Christian Brinton, 1941
Condition
The photogravure, affixed within the folio along the fold, is in generally very good condition. There is some minor soiling in the upper margin. There is offsetting inside the folio from the photogravure.
The photogravure and folio have recently undergone conservation, primarily to address linear folds. This previous condition issue is no longer visible. When examining the reverse of the photogravure, very soft, linear raised areas are, however, discernable to the touch. A full treatment report is available upon request from the department.

His portrait by Paul Haviland was published in Camera Work in 1912. In 1941, Brinton gave his extraordinary collection of modern art to the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
