Condition
Alfred Stieglitz Writing 'Once a Year' at An American Place - This photograph is in generally very good condition. In raking light, a number of tiny impressions and superficial surface scratches that do not appear to break the emulsion are visible overall. The print is trimmed to the image, and there is minor wear along the upper and lower edges.
The print is mounted to thick, slick white board. The mount is worn at the periphery and the corners are bumped. The 'For Philadelphia Museum / Collection Dorothy Normal' label is affixed to the reverse of the mount with 4 pieces of cello-tape. The label is annotated in an unidentified hand as follows: 'Stieglitz writing (Once a Year) at table w/ Marius in background. by Ansel Adams + signed by him. original' (in pencil); and 'SO 38' and 'I-6' (in ink). There is a small, circular yellow sticker affixed to the label. The following notations are in an unidentified hand in pencil on the reverse: '1940'; 'check date with Adams'; '225'; '273'; and 'AS.' There is a 2½-inch abrasion to the upper paper-ply. Also on the reverse of the mount, here is adhesive residue that is still active along the upper edge.
Alfred Stieglitz at An American Place - This photograph is in generally excellent condition. Occasional deposits of original retouching and a few tiny impressions and small superficial surface scratches are visible in raking light. There is a small soft crease near the lower edge, which likely occurred prior to mounting. These are not immediately apparent and do not detract in any way from the fine appearance of this early print.
The print is mounted to thick, slick white board, which is lightly worn at the edges. The 'For Philadelphia Museum / Collection Dorothy Normal' label on the reverse is annotated in an unidentified hand with the following: 'Stieglitz writing 'Once A Year' at table. By Ansel Adams + signed by him. original' (in pencil); '* '68' (in pencil); and 'SO 40' and 'AA-30' (in ink). Also on the reverse are abrasions to the upper paper-ply and paper remnants along the upper edge and in the corners. The reverse of the mount is lightly soiled.
