Description

  • Minor White
  • GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA (FROM SONG WITHOUT WORDS)
  • Gelatin silver print
hinged to a mount, a Philadelphia Museum of Art stamp on the mount, 1959, printed in 1970 (M M M, p. 46)

Provenance

Purchased from the photographer, 1970

Exhibited

Philadelphia Museum of Art, Minor White: The Circle, The Square, The Triangle, January - February 1970

Condition

This photograph, on double-weight semi-glossy paper, is in generally excellent condition. In raking light, a few deposits of original retouching are visible overall. There is a tiny impression that does not appear to break the emulsion near the lower edge. The print is trimmed to the image, and there is chipping along the lower edge. On the reverse of the print, '1980-98-67' is written and crossed out in pencil. The photograph is hinged to a mount. The mount is affixed on the reverse at each of its corners to a modern mat.

Catalogue Note

In 1970, the Philadelphia Museum of Art mounted a major survey of Minor White’s photography titled Minor White: The Circle, The Square, The Triangle.  This and the following White photographs were printed by White for that exhibition.
