Catalogue Note
Julien Levy enthusiastically collected all manner of photography, objets d'art, and ephemera, incorporating it into both his gallery and his home. In his essay for Dreaming in Black and White: Photography at the Julien Levy Gallery, to which this essay is indebted, Peter Barberie describes in detail the variety of 'stuff' collected by Levy and represented in the photographs offered here. Among Levy's eccentric cache were studio portraits of boxers and actors, vintage and modern Nadar images, architectural and automotive studies, press photos, film stills, and found snapshots. Walter Hege’s photographs were avidly collected by Levy, and were featured in the Modern European Photography show at the Levy Gallery in 1932.
