Catalogue Note
This bust is based on the 1883 marble sculpture of a seated Mephistopheles, a centerpiece of the State Russian Museum's sculpture collection. The work achieved such great public acclaim that numerous versions of the figure's head were remade in bronze and marble. On the design, see E. Kuznetsova, M.M. Antokolskii: Zhizn i tvorchestva, Moscow, 1989, pp.140-147.
