Catalogue Note
The inscription reads, "Samuel T. Dana Esq.re from George Peabody & Co., London, in grateful acknowledgement of valuable services, 1861." George Peabody (1795-1869) was an American-born financier and philanthropist, whose merchant banking house would become J.S. Morgan & Co. on his retirement. He is remembered today in the Peabody Trust homes in London, Peabody museums at Harvard, Yale, and Salem, Mass., the Peabody Institute of Music in Baltimore, and Peabody Institute libraries in several cities. He used Samuel T. Dana, of the firm of Dana, Dana & Co., South Market St., Boston, for several of his projects, such as the 1866 establishment of a Peabody Library in Post Mills, Vermont.
