Catalogue Note
Born in Rosières (Ardèche) in 1880, François André was fascinated by the game of baccarat. Early on in his career, his luck was short-lived and gambling quickly swallowed up his savings. His luck, however, soon turned. His fascination with gambling led him to open a gaming circle. He met Eugène Cornuché, the founder of Maxim's restaurant, who opened the Deauville and Ostende Casinos. In 1918, François André founded the Haussmann Circle in Paris but eventually took over from Eugène Cornuché as manager of the Deauville Casino. In the roaring twenties, André breathed a new life into the popular resort turning it into a modern seaside destination. Troubetzkoy was a keen gambler and inevitably a good client of André's. A familiarity between the sitter and sculptor is apparent in the strong characterisation of this portrait.
