the front and back applied with the Imperial eagle in cartouche-shaped reserves flanked by repoussé foliate scrolls, cord, fret and interlace borders, the domed lid with Imperial eagle surmount, ball feet, struck with workmaster's initials and K.Fabergé in Cyrillic beneath the Imperial Warrant, 84 standard, scratched inventory number 11517; on a matching Fabergé circular silver base, workmaster Alexander Väkevä (Wäkevä), St Petersburg, 1904-1908, engraved 'Don de Sa Majesté le Csar Nicolas II/ à l'Amiral Besson, Fevrier 1907', struck with workmaster's initials and K.Fabergé in Cyrillic beneath the Imperial Warrant, 84 standard

Condition
The Imperial eagle surmount is lacking its top central crown. The rim dented downwards on one side, with an outward dent below the rim, overall some nicks. Scratches to the base.

Catalogue Note
Auguste Besson commanded a number of French naval vessels before his promotion to Vice-Admiral of the French Fleet on 19 October 1903. He became Maritime Prefect of the First District at Cherbourg in 1905. Upon his retirement from active duty in 1908, he was named a Grand Officer of the Légion d'Honneur.
