the Mother of God holding a staff and accompanied by the Apostles John and Peter, appearing to St Sergei of Radonezh shown to the right, his hands raised in prayer, followed by his disciple St Nikon, the Mother of God dressed in a blue chiton and brown maphorion, the brighter garments of the apostles contrasting with the darker monastic vestments of the saints opposite, the two tall buildings in the background joined by a red drapery, implying that the represented scene took place indoors, the Old Testament Trinity displayed in grisaille in a segment of heaven

Condition
The border and background regilded, some traces of the original gilding left, some retouching to the painting, a larger patch of repainting in the lower part of the tunic of St Sergei and of St Nikon
