Catalogue Note
Clare Page (b. 1975) and Harry Richardson (b. 1975) work together as COMMITTEE. Their material is the junk that they find in the fly tips, on the markets and streets in Deptford, the area of south-east London where they live and work.
They started the 'Kebab' lamp series in 2003. Built as totems of improbably varied materials, the lamps are composed to contain stories and meanings. Being a functional item made of unconventional materials and techniques, the lamps were part of the critical design practice, qꦯuestioning mass production. According to the designers, the 'Kebab' Lamp “explores the possibility of making a spectacle of attractive qualities out of the random and ordinary. Each one is hopefully a celebration of the very human instinct to aspire to the absolutes of beauty, elegance and sexiness from the jumble of everyday existence”. The lamps won the 2004 UK Elle Decoration/Observer Design Award for Lighting.
