Catalogue Note
Lajvardina wares are characterised by their distinctive lapis blue colour, from where their name derives. Originally stemming from the Sanskrit word “rajavarta”, a portion of the King, the word lajvard is Persian for lapis lazuli. The only dated example of such wares in a tile formerly in Richard Ettinghausen's collection with the date 1315, and it is rare to find examples such as the present vase, in excellent condition, which shows off the deep, Yves Klein-esque blue of the glaze and the delicately drawn foliate design on its surface.
