Catalogue Note

For a discussion on ceremonial horse trappings and covers, çaprak, including examples of pieces used on the hindquarters showing the technique of metal-thread appliqué with velvet or satin, dated circa 1700, see R., Taylor, Ottoman Embroidery, London, 1993, pp. 141-159 and pp. 152-155.

It is extremely rare to find a complete example of such covers due to their original intended use, but an example exists in the National Museum of Warsaw (inv. no. 158259), which includes all the necessary cuts to enable it fit on the saddle (it measures approximately 110 by 142cm).
