Catalogue Note
King Farouk, the last King of Egypt, was known for his extravagance and lavish lifestyle. He was overthrown on 3 July 1952 and forced to abdicate, fleeing Egypt three days later into exile first to Monaco and then Italy until his death in 1962. Farouk left behind an extensive and important collection of works of art which the new Egyptian Government seized, and who subsequently engaged Sotheby's to handle its sale in Cairo. The 1954 "Palace Collections of Egypt" would be a landmark sale and at the was time considered the auction of the century.
