Catalogue Note
The present piece is a beautiful example of an eighteenth century Ottoman lady’s robe (entari). Indicative of the changing social status of women at the time, their styles of clothing adapted as women started wearing more loose-fitting garments and long coats such as the present piece made of precious and delicate materials.
Over the course of the century, through stronger Western influences, a style known as Turkish rococo emerged. New decorative motifs that were first devised by court miniaturists were adapted for cloth, notably flowers, large vines, draperies, ribbons and bows.
Similar pieces from the Topkapi Palace Museum have been published in Istanbul: The City and the Sultan, exh. catalogue, De Nieuwe Kerk, Amsterdam, 2006, pp. 124-6.
