Catalogue Note
The present royal miniature portrait (tasvir-i humayun) of Sultan Abdulmecid I is a rare depiction of the ruler in miniature format. A nearly identical miniature portrait, also signed by Sebuh Manas and dated the same year, is in the Khalili Collection, London (J.M.Rogers, Empire of the Sultans. Ottoman Art from the Collection of Nasser D. Khalili, London, 1995, no.171, pp.246-47).
Sebuh Manas (1816-89)
Stephen Vernoit has identified Sebuh Manas as one of two Armenian brothers sent by Sultan Mahmud II to Paris for training. He became the chief portraitist for Abdulmecid and Sultan Abdulaziz, receiving a Mecidiye medal in 1855.
