Catalogue Note
This Mamluk Qur’an section has a beautiful, colourful frontispiece and an original stamped leather binding. The frontispiece of the Qu’ran has illuminated motifs that make use of unique details associated to the Mamluk tradition at the end of the fourteenth century but that differed from the first half of the century. These changes can be traced to the introduction of Persian and possibly Anatolian styles during this period. A comparable example is a Qur’an associated with an Anatolian illuminator, now in the Khalili Collection (D. James, The Master Scribes, Qur’ans of the 10th to the 14th Centuries, London, 1992, p.190, no.47).
