Catalogue Note

This intensely coloured dish, with its emblematic floral decoration, exemplifies the design associated with Iznik wares after the introduction of the red underglaze in around 1560. It was painted with a bouquet of several flowers, including a tulip, a carnation, a prunus blossom and large saz leaf composed of softly undulating petals in a cobalt blue that contrasts with the bold red vein tying it together. The carnations which peak out from behind the saz leaf are an unusual and interesting feature.
