Catalogue Note

Friedrich Rosen was born into a family of protestant Westphalian 'Orient' scholars and British-Jewish musicians. His grandfather, Friedrich Ballhorn-Rosen, was from a family of Protestant priests and was a Sanskrit scholar, and his father Georg Rosen, a Prussian diplomat in Constantinople and Jerusalem, studied modern Turkish and wrote on the 'Jews and Phoenicians'. The mulitlingual Friedrich Rosen, with his political and cultural interests, formed friendships and relationships which extended from the court of the Shah of Persia, to German academics and the Kaiser, Ottoman officials, and travellers including Iraqi Bedouins and the British writer and explorer Gertrude Bell. He compiled scientific studies of the Orient and is remembered for his translation into German of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. His diplomatic career culminated in him becoming the German Foreign Minister in 1921. He travelled across Persia in 1887 from the Persian Gulf to the Caspian Sea.
