Description
- linen, silk, wool, embroidery
- approximately 273 by 186cm; 8ft. 11in., 6ft. 1in.
polychrome silk embroidery, ikat edging
Condition
Measurements 87cm wide across the top, 86cm. across the bottom, 270cm long left side, 275cm long right side.
Comprised of seven joined vertical sections (approximate widths; 27cm., 27cm., 26.5cm. 26cm., 27cm., 26.5cm. 27cm).
There are some small brown spot marks in areas of the ground. There are some outlines of the design visible, unworked, in places. There are some replaced darker thread outlines in areas, due to oxidisation. There is minor loss to the red hook motif in the lower right corner of the large central roundel motif on the lower edge, and a small hole in the cream ground near to it. There are also some tiny holes in ground in the top right corner. Evidence that folded over in the past, along the lower edge, as the section is cleaner. The whole panel would benefit from a clean, especially as the ground is a cream colour. There is ikat edging on all four sides, partially folded over onto the reverse (loose in sections). The panel is lined with cream coloured coarse linen, which has been attached in evenly spaced rows of stitching at angles across the panel, and around all the edges.
Specialist Comment: Striking design with charming details, such as the polychrome banded surrounds to four of the motifs. Unusually good range of colours.
