Catalogue Note
The present quatrain belongs to a small group of eighteenth-century Ottoman calligraphies executed by master calligraphers employed by the court in Istanbul. Ismail Refik was one such scribe, and his Persian text here praises the virtues of the Caliph Ali, the cousin of Prophet Muhammad.

Ismail Refik was born in Istanbul and learned calligraphy from court calligrapher Katipzade Mehmed Refi. He was famous for his skill in nasta’liq script, and his most celebrated student was Dede-zade Mehmed Said Efendi (d.1759).
