Catalogue Note

The present painting demonstrates the artist's sense of the art of caricature. The housemaids have an imposing presence, their stares towards the lovers rendering the scene humerous. The gentle gaze of the pair of lovers contrasts with that of the housemaids, heightening the psychological content of the painting.

The scene of the interrupted lovers appears to have been a popular subject during the Qajar period, and was repeated by a number of artists. A further painting (a large-scale oil on canvas), attributable to Abu'l Hasan Khan Ghaffari, was offered in these rooms 18 October 2001, lot 77.
