Catalogue Note

Ibsen meets his English translator and biographer.  Edmund Gosse discovered the work of Ibsen in 1871 and set about learning Norwegian in order to translate it.  His translations of The Master Builder and Hedda Gabler introduced Ibsen to the English-speaking world.  Gosse published a biography of Ibsen in 1907.

This note was written w🐓hen Gosse arrived in Norway in 1899 for his first meeting with Ibsen.  "It was a great joy for me to receive your letter.  So now I will finally meet you and your wife in𒉰 person.  I am at home every day in the morning till 1300.  I am happy and surprised by your excellent Norwegian."
