Catalogue Note

First edition,  the corrected second state with the Earl of Chesterfield's name not present on the first page of the dedication. While Johnson penned "A Short Scheme for compiling a new Dictionary" in April 1746, the "Scheme" was enlarged into a "Plan" during the following winter. This Johnson sent this to at least five readers, before the work was published, with a few revisions, in August 1747. While this issue removes the redundant name of Chesterfield in the dedication, it retains the duplication of "the" before "mazes" on leaf E1v.
