Catalogue Note

First edition, illustrated by Parrish, inscribed by Parrish on first half-title: "Maxfield Parrish: Cornish: New Hampshire. 1932." and by Saunders: "Louise Saunders - New Canaan. Connecticut. 1932". Laid in are an autograph letter signed by Parrish (1 March 1932) and another by Saunders (18 March 1932) to the original owner responding to his request for an inscription.

Parrish wrote to Scribner's after reading and seeing a performance of the play: "The reason I wanted to illustrate The Knave of Hearts was on account of the bully opportunity it gives for a very good time making the pictures. Imagination could run riot, bound down by no period, just good fun and all sorts of things" (C. Ludwig, Maxfield Parrish, p. 48).
