Catalogue Note
A wonderful fragment from Thackeray's diatribe on the abuse of literary figures by the press.
Thackeray writes in response to an ill-natured attack on George Smith (editor of Cornhill) by Edmund Yates written for a New York paper. "Certain writers, they say, have a🍸 bad opinion of women. Now am I very whimsical in 🐠supposing that this disappointed candidate will be hurt at her rejection ... Poor old Priam's bald numskull will be cracked, and Troy town will burn, because Paris prefers gold-haired Venus to ox-eyed Juno and grey-eyed Minerva."
