The commission on vellum (18 x 13 /8 in.; 457 x 332 mm), Washington, 10 December 1814, accomplished in a clerical hand and signed by Madison as president of the United States, countersigned by the Secretary of the Navy ("BW Crowinshield") and registrar E. W. DuVal, being James Renshaw's appointment as Master Commandant, engraved martial and maritime vignettes at top and bottom, embossed paper seal of the Navy Department; short marginal tear at center fold; a few tiny holes at one crease. — The ship's passport on vellum (15 x 10 7/8 in.; 380 x 275 mm), [Washington,] 15 March 1817, accomplished in a clerical hand and signed by Madison as president of the United States, countersigned by the Secretary of State ("Jas Monroe") and the Collector of the port of Charlestown, Massachusetts, being a pass for the brig Hindu, commanded by Michael Whitney, mounted with two guns and carrying a crew of fifteen, engraved maritime vignettes at top, embossed paper seal of the United States, neat cancellation clipping at top; accomplishment slightly faded but signatures strong.
