Catalogue Note
First edition. One of 16 copies on Japanese vellum with an original Autograph Letter Signed by Henry James mounted on guards directly after the title-page. The colophon states that the edition of the books comprises 100 numbered copies on Hollande and 16 copies on Japanese vellum, each with an original letter. James's bibliographers, Edel and Laurence, state that these copies were lettered A–P; the colophon does not call for this and the present copy is not lettered. They also make the claim that there were four Roman-numbered hors commerce copies. The edition was sold by Harry Marks in his New York shop.
The original letter in the present volume is letter 15 in the printed text: Autograph letter signed ("Henry James"), 4 pages (10 1/4 x 8 in.; 260 x 203mm) on Lamb House letterhead, Rye, Sussex, 28 October 1912; horizontal and𒉰 vertical folds. 💯 Autograph envelope.
