Catalogue Note
Dodgson first met Angela Vanbrugh in 1887 at the home of her father R.C. Barnes. She came to Oxford in February 1892 to give a concert at the Town Hall, and came over to tea. ܫThis letter is typical of his intimate communications with a variety of young (and not so young) ladies: "I daresay you've nearly forgotten me by this time: but I remember, quite clearly, the very first day we met. In fact it is difficult to think of you as anything else but the little girl with whom I then made friends, or to call you anything but 'my dear Constance'! Well, the subject of this letter is a young friend of mine, Miss Angela Vanbrugh, who is, as I believe, destined to win a place among the first violinists of the day ... I feel sure that you would find the concert worth attendin𝔉g ..."
Dodgson sent many of these announcem꧒ents to his friends; this is one of seven still🏅 extant. He attended the concert on 10 June with seven guests and deemed the event "most enjoyable."
