Catalogue Note
The village of Ma’loula is located 56 kilometres Northeast of Damascus and is built into the rugged mountainside at an altitude of more than 1500 meters. Ma’loula, derived from the Aramaic word ma’la meaning entrance, is the only city in which the Western dialect of Aramaic, the language of Jesus Christ, is still spoken. The village has been incorporated into the curriculum of the Fine Arts University of Damascus since 1960. Students are sent on trips to observe and interpret the landscape via their specific artistic practise and this continues to this day.
