Provenance

Collection of James Marshall Plumer (1899-1960).

Condition

Each with varying degrees of gilt loss, as can be seen in the catalogue photo, as well as general surface wear. The first figure on the left, inscribed to the back with five characters reading Fomen [Bian] shi zao (made by Buddhist surnamed [Bian]) on the smaller figure and ten characters on the larger figure reading Renshou si nian si yue ba ri Jiangdu (Fourth year of Renshou {corresponding to 604}, eighth day of the fourth month at Jiangdu), the figures missing its pin; the second figure from the left, with minor casting flaws and repair to the pin; the center figure with a loss to its pin; the fourth figure with later added inscriptions, one character Sui to the back of the head and signature(Li Hai), date (corresponding to 604) and auspicious phrases around the base, with a chip to a corner of the base; the last figure with a loss to the left hand, two cracks to the trailing ribbon on the right, a crack at the waist, and a loss to the pin. Three of the figures with remnants of inventory numbers.
