Catalogue Note
A bottle with an almost identical decoration on one side is illustrated in Hugh Moss, Victor Graham and Ka Bo Tsang, A Treasury of Chinese Snuff Bottles, The Mary and George Bloch Collection, Vol. 4, Part 2, Inside Painted, Hong Kong, 2000, no. 580. The authors note, ibid., p.380, that this design of paintings and calligraphy was an expression of Ma's desire to show the effort he had put into mastering the calligraphic styles of past masters in order to enhance his own art. In present lot, the circular album leaf is inscribed Nan Tian, which is the sobriquet of Yun Shouping, regarded as one of the six master painters of the Qing dynasty. The calligraphy in the lower right is inscribed Pan Zuyin, a late Qing official who was Ma's contemporary. Another bottle with a similar design was sold at Christie's New York, 21st March 2013, lot 1088.
