Description

  • cloisonne
of square section, modeled on an archaic bronze shape, formed with a gently bulging body, wide trumpet neck, and pedestal foot, the corners and center of each side set with gilded dentilated flanges running vertically from mouth to foot, the body decorated with taotie masks between stylized phoenix blades and other archaistic motifs on the neck and foot, the interior of the mouth covered with large lotus blossoms surrounded by scrolling foliage, the gilded base centered with an apocryphal four-character Jingtai mark

Provenance

Christie's New York, 25th March 1998, lot 89.

Condition

The base is possibly a Qing period replacement. A number of the flanges are loose and have replaced and reattached sections. Holes in the corners of the mouth where old screws were used to reattach the flanges have been filled. There is the expected pitting and there has been restoration and consolidation to the enamels, particularly along the mouth and base.
