Description

  • textile
woven with circular dragon roundels on a latticework ground of stylized clouds, the central section of a single writhing dragon in pursuit of a 'flaming pearl' in couched gold thread, mounted and framed

Provenance

Spink & Son Ltd., London, 1999.

Exhibited

Chinese Textiles, Exhibition, Spink & Son Ltd., London, 1994, no. 33 and again in Threads of Imagination, Central Asian and Chinese Silks from the 12th to the 19th Century, Spink & Son Ltd., London, 1999, no. 18.

Condition

As pictured in the catalogue, the piece is a panel with irregular top and bottom edges. There is fading, scattered pulls, general wear most noticable on the left side, and some seperation between the different colors, most noticable in the central section where there is some repair to the dragon. The central medallion in the second row appears to have some small spots of white mold. The piece is mounted and framed and has not been examined outside of the frame.
