Catalogue Note

Dr. George Daniels C.B.E (1926 – 2011) is regarded by many as having been the greatest watchmaker of the last 250 years. In a career spanning more than 60 years he was responsible for not only single-handedly reviving the art of the handmade watch, but for inventing its single most important technological development… the revolutionary Daniels Co-axial escapement.

In 2010, Dr. Daniels’ desire turned to the creation of a further𝓰 series of watches, this time utilising his own design of English movement, design▨ed and made in-house on the Isle of Man, and more in line with his hand-made philosophy.

He approached Roger Smith with a proposal and so, 35 years after the invention of the Co-axial, they formed a coඣllaboration to produce the ‘Co-axial Anniversary’ wristwatch.

The rem♚it was to design and make a new Daniels wristwatch movement to celebrate the public’s affection for the mechanical timekeeper and the art of the handmade watch.

George Daniels life’s work was focused on the improvement of the mechanical timekeeper and this mechanism is its conclusion. It💙 🃏is also the very first and only production Daniels wristwatch to have been designed and made in its entirety within the shores of the Isle of Man.

The co-axial escapement used in the mechanism is a piece of art in its own right and has re-written the mechanical watch making industry standards. It is now regarded as the most significant advancement in mechanical timekeeping since the invention by Thomas Mudge of the lever escapement, which he first used in a watch in 1769.

When talking about the present watch, Roger Smith quotes:🎶 &ldꦍquo;the Daniels Anniversary wristwatch is George Daniels’ natural progression, from the Millennium series of wrist watches, driven by his desire to design and make an entirely in-house production wristwatch. This significant personal goal was achieved prior to George’s passing in 2011.’’
