Condition
Executed on a sand-primed sheet of paper, not laid down, affixed to the mount, and floating in the overmount. The upper edge is slightly unevenly cut, and the lower and right edges are deckled. There is a small paper loss towards the upper part of the left edge and a further paper loss to the upper left corner. There are pinholes to each of the four corners. There is a diagonal crease running across the lower right corner (visible in the catalogue illustration). There is a repaired tear running from the centre of the right edge across to the stomach of the figure. The surface is highly textured. Otherwise this work is in overall good condition.

Catalogue Note
Born in Poland, Jankel Adler settled in Düsseldorf in the early 1920s at which point he met fellow painter Otto Dix. Their mutual respect for one another quickly grew into a close friendship, reflected in Dix's portrait of his friend in 1926, conjuring a particularly modest tone compared with the more brutal execution of his more distinctive works.
