Catalogue Note
The novelist and critic J.-K. Huysmans, in his review of the seventh Impressionist exhibition, commented on the works by Pissarro noting that 'Pissarro exhibits an entire series of peasant men and women, and once again this painter shows himself to us in a new light... The human figure often takes on a biblical air in his work. But not any more. Pissarro has entirely detached himself from Millet's memory. He paints his country people without false grandeur, simply as he sees them. His delicious little girls in their red stockings, his old woman wearing a kerchief, his shepherdesses and laundresses, his peasant girls cutting hay or eating, are all true small masterpieces' (quoted in Joachim Pissarro, Camille Pissarro, New York, 1993, p. 157).
Paysannes assises gardant des vaches clearly illustrates the strong influence that the younger Neo-Impressionists such as Seurat and Signac had on Pissarro's work. He adapted their divisionist techniques and built up his oil paintings and gouaches with tiny strokes of paint that also demonstrated his concerns for the Impressionist explorations of light and atmosphere.
