Catalogue Note

Pierre Bonnard dedicated Danseuse Espagnole to the Romanian Prince Emmanuel Bibesco (1877-1917), a diplomat, lawyer and writer. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Emmanuel and his brother Antoine were actively involved in Parisian artistic, intellectual and political circles and indeed Emmanuel counted Marcel Proust as one of his closest friends. In February 1901, Bonnard went on a journey through Spain in the company of fellow artist Edouard Vuillard and the two princes. The tour consisted of visits to several cities, including Seville, Granada and Toledo; it was documented by Bonnard in a series of sixty-seven photographs taken on his small camera. The artist gave this picture to the Romanian Prince in memory of their joint travels around Spain.

Following the death of Emmanuel, Danseuse Espagnole was inherited by his cousin Princess Marthe Bibesco (1886-1973), a well-known writer of the Belle Époque. Subsequently, the painting belonged to an important American art dealer Theodore Schempp, who owned galleries on both sides of the Atlantic in Paris and New York. Afterwards, the painting was acquired by collector and supporter of Modern and Primitive art Lee Ault, who passed away in 1996. He was also a publisher, who produced numerous quality art books and magazines as well as running an art gallery in New York.
