Condition

Executed on wove glossy paper, not laid down, examined unframed. The lower edge is uneven and fraying in places while the upper edge is wavy with some time-staining. There is an artists pinhole in the centre of the upper edge and two small blemishes either side. There are scattered brown oxidation spots notably towards the edges, otherwise this work remains in overall stable condition.

Catalogue Note

In 1918, Man Ray attended a New York performance by Spanish dancers and this provided inspiration for a number of works of the period in which he incorporated the theme of the dancer in his compositions. Together with a closely-related coloured drawing of a dancer in Spanish costume (see Montclair, 2003, p. 195), the artist accentuates the billowing elaborate petticoats and hem line of her dress, twirling with her movements, as she stomps beat with her dancing shoes and her hand-held castanets.
