Catalogue Note
Man Ray chose to include this image in the seminal 1934 album that served as a retrospective of his photographic work in Paris to date, Man Ray Photographs 1920-1934 Paris. This photograph is representative of Man Ray’s experimental approach to still life photography in the striking juxtaposition between the freshly picked magnolia blossom set on the background of a woven wicker café chair. Experimentation of nature on man-made grib, reminiscent of a chessboard. One of most celebrated photographs. Typical of Surrealist photography, the blossom has been removed from its natural environment, its intriguing forms accentuated by the tightly cropped composition.
