Catalogue Note

Erik Satie (1866-1925) was a French composer of music. Man Ray met Satie at the vernissage of his first exhibition in Paris, at the Librairie Six in November 1921. Man Ray recalled: “With a little white beard, an old-fashioned pince-nez, black bowler hat, black overcoat and umbrella, he looked like an undertaker or an employee of some conservative bank.” (Self Portrait, 1988, p. 96). At the exhibition, Satie “was able to converse with [Man Ray] in English, and their friendship warmed at the corner groggery. As they returned to the gallery, a French hardware store was exciting enough to inspire the now notorious object, Gift (Cadeau), the flatiron studded with tacks.” (Copley, 1963, p. 109).
