Catalogue Note

This stone birthing figure, now in the collection of Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection, Washington, D.C., has been the subject of fascination and controversy for over a century, considered by some to be a masterpiece whilst others deemed it a fake. It was owned in the 1930s by the Galerie Ratton, Paris, when Man Ray made a series of photographs of it. A smaller print of this photograph is owned by the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
